CALL FOR ARTISTS
New this year will be Spring Art Prize 2016! Based loosely on the Grand Rapids Art Prize, any student in 7-12th grade may enter ONE work of art into the Spring Art Prize competition. HOW IT WORKS:
Any student who wishes to enter their work into the Spring Art Prize will be asked to bring their work to Mrs. DeKett to be photographed and uploaded to the @mrsdekettsroom Instagram account. From there, students will take it upon themselves to promote their artwork via social media. Invite friends and family to follow @mrsdekettsroom and ‘like’ your artwork. Artwork that is entered into the competition will have a star sticker on their label during the Spring Art Show. The deadline for submissions is Friday April 15th and the artwork will be revealed on the Instagram account beginning Saturday April 16th. Votes/Likes will be open from April 16th-27th. It is so exciting to see how much these artists have grown since semester one. The attention to detail and project ideas that they come up with inspire me everyday!

Congratulations to McKensey Kendall and Hayden Petitt! Both artists received Honorable Mention awards during the Crooked Tree Art Center Student Exhibition! Hayden’s teacups will be used as artwork of the gallery postcards and both artists will have their work travel to Lansing in early March for a chance to be accepted into the Michigan Art Education Association State Exhibit. Highlights from Critique #3 and #4
The end of the semester is close and I never posted highlights from Critique #3. Enjoy the slideshow below of artwork created during second marking period.
Critique #2 Highlights
We just finished our last critique of the marking period! I am so impressed by the creativity and innovation that is going on in the art room, you can see artwork from some standout artists below.
Highlights from Critique #1
This week we had our first critique of the school year! I was very impressed with our first round of Choice Projects. It felt awesome to hear students talk about how personal and meaningful their artwork was. I am so happy I changed the art room set up to a TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) Curriculum. Check out some highlights from the critique.
What does 'CHOICE' look like?
For the final project of the year, I presented students with a 'Choice Project'. They were allowed to explore any media or concept that they were interested in and create a work of art for a class critique. Emphasis was put on the process behind the artwork, I really wanted to see rough draft planning and brainstorming happening. After seeing the variety of artwork in the critique and seeing how excited students were about their work, I knew I was making the right decision to switch to a choice based curriculum! I think the change to a TAB (Teaching for Artistic Behavior) art room is the right choice for our school and I am so thrilled to see what my artists have in store for me next year. Check out some of the choice projects below!
