Have you ever wondered what a choice based art room looks like? At first glance an outsider may think the room is chaotic and noisy, but if you take a look around the room you will notice how engaged students are in creating their artwork. This is just one of the many benefits of running a choice based art program. This week we focused on the following themes and artist connections: 6th Grade: grid drawing, Chuck Close 7th Grade: texture, Vincent Van Gogh 8th Grade: unity/harmony, Giuseppe Arcimboldo Fundamentals: places and spaces, Jennifer Maravillas Exploring Art: enemies and rivalries, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso Have you heard of Art Prize? It is an international art competition held in Grand Rapids and it is happening NOW! High school students have the opportunity to write an essay to secure a spot on a field trip to experience Art Prize. Check out the video below to see what they will be experiencing first hand.

Wow! It has been a whirlwind of creativity in the art room these past few weeks! Students have been busy learning the expectations and procedures of a choice based art room while working on some pretty amazing projects. Our schedule for the week will remain consistent throughout the year. On Mondays, themes are introduced while students take visual notes in their sketchbooks. Tuesdays are boot camps so that students can learn about new skills and techniques to get some hands-on experience with them. Wednesdays are Artist Connections that include discussions, presentations and videos about contemporary or historical artists. We end the week with independent work days on Thursdays and Critiques on Fridays.
So far, classes have learned about the following themes and artists: 6th Grade: contrast, color, M.C. Escher, Peter Max 7th Grade: value, color, line, Ansel Adams, Piet Mondrian 8th Grade: contrast, color, pattern, Rene Magritte, Gustav Klimt Fundamentals: transformation, culture and society, Meret Oppenheim, Dorothea Lange Exploring Art: cliques and social groups, people and music, Kseniya Simonova The art room received a very generous donation from the Mesick Women's Club this week and I would like to give a HUGE thank you to all who helped make it happen! |
